Rinse, wash, repeat… God?

Our days are patterned. They follow a rhythm. We wake up. We brush our teeth. We walk the dog. We drop the kids off at school. We hop on the bus. We work. We eat lunch. We work some more. We hop back on the bus. We exercise. We watch a little television. We sleep.

Rinse, wash and repeat. That’s how it goes…

Stranger Than FictionOne of my favorite recent movies is “Stranger Than Fiction.” In this delightful, theologically rich film, Will Ferrell plays an IRS agent named Harold Crick. Harold leads a very routinized life. Very. He wakes at the same time every day. He brushes his teeth with 76 strokes. He knots his tie with the same Half-Windsor, and he always catches the 8:15 bus to work. Always.

Well, almost always.

One day, Harold’s routine gets disrupted. This unexpected hitch throws poor Harold for a spin. Like many of us, our hero likes his carefully plotted life. Yet, it turns out that Harold’s “Creator” has no sympathy for this. Happily, we get to follow the journey that results because our hero’s routine has been interrupted.

As the film unfolds, we watch Harold’s life bloom, and we quickly realize that his routines—while comfortable—were shielding him from life. In failing to look up from his habitual activities, Harold was missing out on the sweet and savory tastes all around him. By the end, Harold is learning to taste, to see, and to love all over again.

This week in worship, we are going to be talking about our life’s patterns and we will be focused on the most basic human routine: waking and sleeping. We are going to study how our faith honors these hinge moments as sacred and liberating mileposts on life’s journey.

See you in worship,

SBJ
